The Orchard Hills loop trail, the one that skirts a working avocado orchard on the edge of the Loma Ridge open space, is not a walk-up trail. Miss the registration window, arrive late, and the gate closes without you. The trail you can only reach with a reservation
The loop is actually two loops nested together, and the choice between them is the one decision that shapes your evening.

The Orchard Hills trail is planned to eventually connect to a regional protected open space area encompassing Loma Ridge, Limestone Canyon, and Agua Chinon Canyon.
That planned connection is the quiet reason this trail matters more than its three-mile footprint suggests. It is the western edge of a much larger network, and the docent-led access is what keeps the immediate loop uncrowded while the rest of the system grows.
How to actually get on a hike this month

- Register before the cap fills. Popular sunset hikes on Saturdays have gone to a waitlist.
- Arrive early. The gate closes at the scheduled start, and late arrivals are turned away.
- Bring water, closed-toe shoes, and a red-tinted flashlight for hikes that return after sunset.
The minimum-age policies vary. The 6-mile sunset outer route is adults only. The 3-mile Hangman's Tree hike is open to ages twelve and up. If you are planning a family evening, check the age rating on the specific listing before you register two kids and one adult.
The trail you can walk any evening, no gate required
The Hicks Canyon Trail is the counterweight. Where the ridge trail is scarce, Hicks Canyon is generous. It runs a little over two miles from the Peters Canyon Trail junction in Northpark east to Portola Parkway at the Orchard Hills edge, and it is open dawn to dusk with no reservation.
What most neighbors do not realize is that Hicks Canyon is really two parallel trails. One is a wide dirt path for horses, joggers, and walkers. The other is a paved two-lane trail for bikes and strollers. They run side by side under a canopy of mature eucalyptus trees that were planted in a grid decades ago as windbreaks to protect Irvine Ranch crops from Santa Ana winds. The Irvine master plan preserved that grid, and it is why Hicks Canyon feels older and shadier than almost anything else in the village.
If you want the long version, the loop that combines Hicks Canyon, the Peters Canyon Wash Trail, and the Portola Parkway bike lane totals 6.04 miles. If you want the short version, Hicks Canyon Community Park at 3864 Viewpark Avenue is the trailhead with parking, restrooms, a playground, and sports fields. Citrusglen Park sits at the other end. Both are on-trail pit stops.
A note for August specifically: because most of Hicks Canyon is paved and shaded, it stays walkable during the late afternoon hours when dirt trails farther inland are still radiating heat off the ground. - Nara Thai Kitchen opened at the center and has become a routine evening stop. The menu covers appetizers like Thai sausage and shrimp summer rolls, plus filet mignon ka pow, pan-fried noodles, and both panang and green curry.
- Zov's is the dessert answer when a hike ends and you do not want to cook.
- La Sirena Grill covers casual Mexican, with outdoor seating that works well after the sun drops behind Loma Ridge.
- Ayame Fine Japanese Cuisine, at 3923 Portola Parkway, is the sit-down option for a slower night.
- Peet's Coffee is the morning bookend, and LePort Montessori handles the school-run rhythm that a lot of Groves and Reserve families are already built around.
- Hoag Urgent Care is the practical detail nobody mentions until they need it.
The Market Place, roughly four miles up Irvine Boulevard between 6200 and 6460 Irvine Blvd, is the second option when Orchard Hills Shopping Center is too small for the evening. Trader Joe's, Ralphs Fresh Fare, Panera, The Home Depot, HomeGoods, and LA Fitness sit there, along with a Hoag Health Center. A late-August evening, actually mapped
Here is how the pieces fit together for a resident who wants to use the neighborhood the way it was designed.
Register mid-week for a Saturday sunset hike on the Orchard Hills loop. On Thursday, walk Hicks Canyon at seven in the evening for a shaded two-mile stretch and stop at Citrusglen Park on the way back. On Saturday, arrive at the trail meeting point ten minutes early, take the outer loop, and confirm from the top of Loma Ridge that you can, in fact, see Catalina. Come down and drive three minutes to the Orchard Hills Shopping Center. Sit outside at Nara Thai or La Sirena Grill. Pick up something at Pavilions on the walk to the car. Home before it is fully dark.
